The Vixen VA225C autoguider camera is designed to tackle common challenges in astrophotography, such as atmospheric interference and minor tracking errors that can cause star trails during long exposures. When paired with an optional guide scope, this highly sensitive colour CMOS camera continuously monitors star positions and automatically adjusts your equatorial mount in real time to correct for any deviations. This allows you to capture sharp, long-exposure images — especially useful when using telescopes with longer focal lengths.

The VA225C makes it easy for newcomers to get started with autoguiding. Simply connect the camera to your telescope mount using the included ST4 cable for fully automated tracking control. We recommend the Vixen 7x50mm Finder Scope II (sold separately, item no.: X086161) as a guide scope. Its parfocal design ensures the focus remains consistent when switching between an eyepiece and the camera — so your guide star stays locked in view.

Thanks to the large aperture of 50 mm, the Vixen 7x50 finder scope immediately reveals many objects that are not visible in smaller viewfinders. This makes it easy to adjust the telescope to the target object. The red illumination of the finder scope can be dimmed to different levels.The eyepiece is detachable (31.7 mm diameter) so that a CMOS camera with 31.7 mm diameter (available separately) can be attached and used as an autoguider. The eyepiece unit with crosshairs is also removable in order to use 31.7 mm diameter eyepieces (sold separately) with different focal lengths. This allows the finder scope to be operated with various magnifications.The lens is designed to be compatible with CMOS cameras. The distance between the bottom of the 31.7 mm sleeve on the camera side and the sensor surface should be approximately 17 mm. However, the focus position may vary depending on the camera, so you should adjust the guiding camera for focus before use. The focus of the optics is adjusted by rotating the lens. First, the black lock ring on the main optics must be loosened. Then, the focus can be adjusted by turning the lens mount. This camera is very good for astrophotography with short exposure times, i.e. for celestial objects like the moon, planets or star clusters. The particularly low noise level of this new chip generation from SONY, ensures an exceptionally high brilliance and no cooling is required. Due to the high native pixel resolution of 1280x980, together with suitable telescopes, very beautiful images of the moon, but also detailed planetary images are possible.
The ToupSky pro software included in the scope of delivery not only offers the necessary basic functions for image and video recording, but also many helpful special functions for image post-processing and for setting up the Guider. Functions such as live image display, exposure settings, white balance, dark image capture, stacking, timelapse recordings and much more can be individually configured. Especially the very sophisticated software makes it really easy for you to get started in astrophotography. With the automatic settings, you can produce absolutely presentable results without much prior knowledge. If you wish, simply switch off the automatic settings and gradually venture into the individual professional settings.
Connect the camera directly to the ST4 connector of your telescope mount and you have fully automatic tracking control. This makes long exposures of several minutes possible without the stars producing unwanted line marks due to the ever-present synchronisation fluctuations of a telescope mount. A corresponding ST-4 connection cable is even included with the camera. Due to the high light sensitivity of the camera, you will always find a suitable guide star even with very short exposure times. For connection to guide tubes or off-axis guiders, the camera has a 1.25" plug-in sleeve, 1.25" filter thread (M28.5x0.6) and C-mount thread (1 "x1/32").
IMPORTANT NOTES:
This is not a stand-alone guider camera. You always need a Windows 10 / 11 computer to take pictures and for autoguiding.
The autoguider software is not included. You can use PHD2 Guiding, Guidedog, Metaguide, Guidemaster (freeware) or AstroArt, MaxIm DL (paid).
