FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
For this application we recommend the BRESSER Erudit DLX 40-1000x microscope in combination with a USB camera, e.g. the BRESSER MikroCam 1.3 MP. This solution offers better image quality and flexibility than a simple LCD microscope.
If you want to identify bacteria, it is usually more useful to create a culture. Microscopes are generally only sufficient to determine whether the bacteria are, for example, spherical or rod-shaped.
The Barlow lens is already installed in the eyepiece tube on many devices. It can be pulled out at the upper ridge to use the zoom function.
Possible causes:
- Sample too thick / unsuitable: Use thin samples or fixed smears.
- No cover glass or incorrect thickness: Objectives are optimized for cover glasses.
- Condenser incorrectly adjusted: Do not open the diaphragm too far – otherwise contrast will be low.
- Magnification too high: Rule of thumb: maximum 1000 × objective aperture. Example: With a 40x objective with aperture 0.65, the limit is about 650x.

Both functions can be used with a pre-recorded image series or directly in live view. With live focus stacking (EDF), the MikroCamLabII software can produce razor-sharp images in just minutes. As you adjust the focus on your microscope, the software automatically builds a perfectly sharp final image—no extra steps needed. This allows you to achieve stunning, high-quality results in no time.
The built-in measurement function* helps you determine dimensions or overlay a scale. With just a few clicks, you can measure distances, angles, or areas. Advanced tools even allow for precise measurements of circles (including area and radius) and complex polygons.
Measurements can be performed on both captured images and live view. The MikroCamLabII software also includes powerful algorithms for automated image analysis, such as particle counting and surface evaluation.
